The elements are usually related to seasons. Winter for example is the Water element, Summer the Fire element. You can practice more of that element during that season to strengthen it. Or, for example, if it's hot outside and your Qi has excess heat, sometimes you practice the water element during summer to balance. Otherwise, you can simply practice all 5 elements to stay balanced. It's also fine to focus on one element for a week, then the next, and so on. There are really no rules. Practicing the 5 elements is all about balance and harmony.
